Coming out of the Draft, the Seattle Mariners have added some much needed pitching depth and they secured some prospects who can jump in the starting lineup immediately.
Starting Pitcher Andy Sonnanstine - with a Mariners pitching crew that has two bright stars in Freddy Garcia and Jeff Francis, Sonnanstine will probably get a shot at the starting five. If he is as good as the scouts say, he will be a mainstay in the rotation.
Relievers Clay Hensley and Cla Meredith - both of these relievers will definitely get a shot with the parent team. Relief pitching has been a bright spot for Seattle, but these two will definitely make it better and will reduce the workload on Brian Fuentes.
Second Baseman Robinson Cano - Although the Mariners have David Bell and Bret Boone, the Mariners have never been satisfied with the middle infielders. So Cano has been slated to take over for Boone and Bell will fill in. This is probably the end of the line for Bret Boone as he has been sent down to Tacoma. Although a lineup spot has not been completely decided upon, he will probably bat fifth and help the team.
In a related note, John Olerud has shown some improvements in the training room and he looks to have regained some of his old form. It’s rumoured that he will be moving up to the cleanup spot and retaking his role as the full-time first baseman.
